Replacing a faulty electronic control unit

Control Unit Replacement and Programming

Car won't start, an electronic feature has stopped working, or a scan points to a control unit? Don't rush to buy a replacement. We first check whether the unit is actually at fault, find out which replacement would fit and explain what programming may be needed to make it work in your car.

    Check whether replacement is needed

A control unit not responding does not always mean it has failed. We check its power, wiring and the affected system first. Sometimes repairing the original or fixing a poor connection is a better option.

    Find the right replacement

A similar-looking unit or a nearly matching part number may not be enough. We check that the proposed replacement suits your car and can work with its other systems.

Set up the unit for your car

A new or used control unit may need suitable software and settings to match your car's equipment. The process depends on the model; some jobs also need manufacturer online access.

Connect it with the car's other systems

Some control units must be matched to the immobilizer, keys or other modules. We check whether that is needed and whether the procedure is supported for your car.

Make sure the car works correctly

After installation we check communication with the unit and the functions linked to your original problem. If the fault was elsewhere, further diagnosis may be needed.

New control unit

We can check the part number and compatibility before a new unit is fitted. Even a new module may need programming and setup to work in your particular car.

Used control unit

A unit from another car may not work straight away. We check whether it is compatible and can be set up. One possible option is transferring data from the old unit if the original data can be read and the donor is suitable.

Find out what failed

We check whether the control unit is actually faulty. If repair is possible, we can discuss that instead of replacement.

Check replacement compatibility

We compare part numbers and unit versions. A similar part from another car may not fit or work.

Install the necessary software

Where supported, we program the unit with suitable software and the settings your car requires.

Check the key and starting system

Some units must be matched with the car's security system. Protected operations require proof of ownership.

Set up connected systems

The installed unit may need additional steps to work with the car's other equipment.

Test the car after installation

We check communication, warning messages and the functions that matter for the job.

The purchased unit may not fit

A similar part number does not guarantee compatibility. It's better to check the exact unit before buying.

Fitting it may not be enough

New and used units sometimes need programming and additional setup.

Some jobs need manufacturer access

Protected systems may require online authorization or ownership verification.

There is no single method for every vehicle

The replacement procedure depends on the car and the type of control unit.

The fault may not be in the unit

Poor power or damaged wiring can produce similar symptoms. Replacing the unit without checks may not help.

Original data cannot always be recovered

If the old unit is badly damaged, transferring its software or settings may be impossible.

// SUMMARY: We confirm the cause and compatibility first, agree the work, then test the result. Extra procedures and their costs are discussed in advance.
