Control Unit Cloning and Data Transfer

Moving data from a damaged control unit

Control Unit Cloning and Data Transfer

An electronic control unit has failed and a new one is expensive? Sometimes a compatible used unit can replace it if we can transfer the settings from the original. First, we check whether the old unit can be read and whether the replacement is suitable. We explain any extra work needed on the car before proceeding.

    Check the old unit

We assess how badly the original unit is damaged and whether its necessary data can still be read. Sometimes a unit no longer works in the car, but its memory is accessible. If it is badly damaged, a transfer may not be possible.

    Find a suitable replacement

A used unit has to suit your car, not just look the same. We compare the part number, version and whether the required information can be transferred. Checking it before purchase can prevent wasted money.

    Save what can be read

If the original unit allows it, we read the information needed and save a copy before transfer. This may include engine settings, vehicle configuration or starting-system data. Not every control unit allows all of its data to be read.

    Transfer data to the replacement

When both units are compatible and the original data is available, we write the necessary information to the replacement. Sometimes the car still needs extra setup to make the unit work with the keys or other systems.

    Check the result

After transfer, we check that the replacement unit responds and that the accessible data was written correctly. Final checks of starting and other functions may need to be performed with the unit installed in the car.

    EXAMPLE CHECK AFTER TRANSFER

    // READY TO RUN

Inspect the damaged unit

We find out whether it responds and whether the information required can still be read.

Check the used replacement

We compare part numbers and versions to avoid selecting an unsuitable replacement.

Save a copy where possible

We save the data accessible from the original unit. A complete copy is not always possible.

Move the necessary data

We write supported data into a compatible replacement, where the procedure allows.

Explain what was completed

We tell you what information could be saved and what still needs to be done on the car.

Check the replacement unit

We check whether it responds after programming. Starting and other functions may require checks in the vehicle.

A similar-looking unit may not fit

Units that look identical can have different software or hardware. Check compatibility before buying.

The original may be too badly damaged

If the required data cannot be read, we may be unable to transfer it.

Additional setup may be needed

The unit may have to be matched to the keys or other systems after it is fitted.

There is no single method for every unit

The approach depends on the specific vehicle and type of control unit.

Protected operations require proof of ownership

Work involving vehicle security and starting systems requires ownership verification.

A completed transfer is not a repair guarantee

The replacement must still be tested in the car, since the original problem may have another cause.

// SUMMARY: Send us the part number or a photo of the old unit and the proposed replacement. We will check the options and agree the work before transfer.

// Removed control units can be sent from another city by prior arrangement. Please provide the vehicle model and part numbers of both units. If the original is badly damaged or extra setup is needed after fitting, we will discuss the options and cost before proceeding.
