Some Audi models use the Multitronic automatic transmission, also known as a CVT. An electronic control unit manages its operation. If that unit fails, the transmission may enter limp mode or behave unpredictably. Similar symptoms can have other causes, too.
When the control unit needs checking
- PRNDS flashes or a transmission warning appears on the dashboard.
- The car enters limp mode or will not engage forward or reverse.
- The problem comes and goes, sometimes after the car warms up.
- A diagnostic tool cannot communicate with the transmission control unit or reports related faults.
These symptoms do not automatically mean the unit needs replacing. Wiring, sensors, hydraulics or mechanical faults can cause similar problems.
What we check and repair
We identify the exact unit, check power supply, communication and available diagnostic data. If the fault is inside the electronics, we assess whether repair is possible.
If the original unit cannot be restored, we can discuss a compatible replacement unit, programming and data transfer. Availability depends on the part number and the condition of the original unit.
Supported control unit families
- VL300 — Audi Multitronic 01J.
- VL381 — Audi Multitronic 0AW.
These belong to different generations and are not interchangeable simply because they look similar.
What to send us
Please provide the vehicle model and year, VIN, a clear photo of the unit's part number and a diagnostic report if available. If the unit has already been removed, arrange delivery or collection with us in advance.
How the repair works
We repair Audi Multitronic VL300 and VL381 electronic transmission control units, either with the vehicle at our workshop or as a separately removed unit.
If the vehicle is brought to us, we remove the control unit, diagnose and repair it, then reinstall it. Because the unit is located inside the transmission, the work includes the necessary disassembly, draining the fluid and filling the relevant part of the CVT with fresh fluid. The circuit being serviced depends on the transmission design and the repair performed. After reassembly, we check the transmission's operation.
If the control unit has already been removed, you can bring it to us or send it by courier after arranging delivery in advance. In that case, we diagnose and repair the unit itself.
We confirm whether repair is possible, the work required and the price after inspection.
Features
- Power and communication checks
- Electronics repair when a fault is confirmed
- Programming or data transfer where compatible
