Automotive electronics are evolving faster than many can keep up with. While a simple adapter used to be enough to connect to a car, we now face an architecture where old diagnostic methods simply do not work. Manufacturers are massively implementing CAN-FD and Automotive Ethernet protocols. Imagine trying to read a book in Ancient Greek while only knowing Latin—that is roughly how an old scanner feels when connected to a modern data bus. CAN-FD transmits information significantly faster and in larger volumes, while Ethernet allows control units to communicate with each other almost like home computers on a network. For diagnostics, this means one thing: without support for these protocols, equipment cannot "see" the control units, read fault codes, or perform adaptations. At AUTOLAB, we constantly update our computer diagnostics to stay up to speed. The problem is that even if a scanner physically plugs into the port, it may not understand the "language" the car is speaking. This results in the technician seeing only part of the data or receiving an "empty" list of modules. Car owners often find that after trying to diagnose a newer vehicle with a cheap device, a "Christmas tree" of error lights appears on the dashboard. This happens because old software sends incorrect requests that "confuse" modern electronic systems. In such cases, it is not just about clearing errors; it requires deep work with ECU repair or reprogramming. When choosing a service center, it is important to understand: a technician having an expensive tablet does not guarantee results. It is essential that the software is up to date and supports the specific manufacturer's protocols. We regularly encounter cars that "cannot be read" by universal tools, and we solve this using professional dealer-level equipment. If your car is a recent model year, do not waste time trying to read it with old scanners—it could end in a software malfunction. It is better to go straight to those who work with current protocols and know how to properly "communicate" with modern electronics.
